ABSTRACT

Background: Corona Virus Disease-19 (COVID-19) is an infectious pandemic that has recently emerged. Preventive steps made to curb the spread have far-reaching consequences across all sectors and age groups. Adolescents are the most silent victims. They are not unconcerned about the COVID-19 Pandemic's severe psychological impact. Fears, uncertainty, significant changes in their routines, physical and social isolation, and a high level of parental stress affect them. The aim of this study is to identify the effect of the COVID- 19 pandemic on mental health of adolescent girls. Methodology: Data was collected through an online survey during the month of June and July 2021. In this study, 228 participants were included. The impact of the Corona virus pandemic on participants' mental health was assessed using a validated questionnaire. Result: The study showed that most of the adolescent girls were feeling stressful due to not able to go to school (75%), not able to meet friends (56%) and confined in a house during COVID-19 pandemic. 66% girls showed fear of corona infection, 50% girls were worried, 35% were showed anxiety whereas 25% girls showed restlessness and fear of death due to COVID-19. Conclusion: The findings imply that during the COVID-19 pandemic, adolescent girls are more concerned about government constraints aimed at preventing the virus's spread, and that these concerns are linked to higher anxiety, fear, restlessness, and worry. To avoid the situation from worsening, more research and support should be done.

ABSTRACT

Ashawagandha is herb used for various kinds of disease especially as a nervine tonic. Considering these facts many scientific studies were carried out and its memory, anti-stress activities were studied in detail. Aims and Objectives: To study the Phytochemical analysis and Pharmacological Study of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) varieties and Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal wild purified with milk steam (WSWM) root powder. To study the efficacy of Wild and Cultivated varieties of Ashwagandha on rats through Elevated Plus Maze test and Morris Water Maze (MWM) model. Materials and Methods: The formulations Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal wild (WSW) root powder, Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal Nagori (WSN) root powder, Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal wild purified with milk steam (WSWM) root powder, PG (Wheat powder placebo) were subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening for the detection of various chemical constituents present. Animal experimentation was done on Wistar Albino Rats obtained from the animal house attached and are divided into three groups consisting of 6 rats per group. Nootropic agents are effectively screened using this paradigm in scopolamine-induced dementia. Elevated Plus Maze and Morris Water Maze (MWM) model are based on this phenomenon. Results: By performing phytochemical analysis, Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal Nagori (WSN) showed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, phytosterols, saponins, proteins and amino acids. Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal wild purified with milk steam (WSWM) showed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, proteins and amino acids and wheat powder placebo (PG) showed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, saponins, phenolic compounds, tannins, proteins amino acids and flavonoids. Conclusion: The formulation group 3 (WSWM) showed remarkable reduction in the transfer latency time (in elevated plus maze test) from the acquisition day to the retention day and therefore considered Group 3 is statistically significant. The formulation group 3 (WSWM) showed remarkable reduction in the latency scores in Morris water maze and hence Group 3 (Ashwagandha wild purified with milk steam (WSWM) root powder) is statistically significant.

ABSTRACT

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is an indolent malignancy of lymphocytes commonly seen in elderly. Dissemination of malignancy is a rare cause of acute liver failure and has rarely been reported. Here we describe the case of a sixty five year old male presenting with acute liver failure. He is a diabetic with no known history of seropositive hepatitis, drug intake or any addictions. Bone marrow and liver biopsy suggestive of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. He eventually succumbed to his illness.

ABSTRACT

Pulmonary tuberculosis is a devastating disease affecting millions of people in developing countries such as India. Many complications of this disease are known, however only few of its hematological complications have been reported. Discovery of its unknown thrombogenic potential is one such disturbing new entity. Tuberculosis can induce a hypercoagulable state and can lead to thromboembolic complications and deep vein thrombosis. Here we report an interesting and rare case of 20-year-old male, newly diagnosed case of Pulmonary Tuberculosis presenting with complaints of acute onset right lower limb swelling and pain. He was diagnosed with thrombosis of external iliac vein. All possible causes for a provoked deep vein thrombosis were evaluated for and ruled out. The patient was started with first line anti tubercular treatment-rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrizinamide, ethambutol along with anti-thrombotics injection enoxaparin and warfarin and followed up for 6 months. He made complete recovery of both his pulmonary and limb disease.

ABSTRACT

In humans, infections with dengue viruses range from mild fever with thrombocytopenia to life-threatening forms like vasodilatory shock with hemorrhagic manifestations. Of the many complications known of dengue fever, pancreatitis is a rarely discussed event. We would like to present a rare and unusual complication of this common disease. A 17 year old female with past history of tuberculosis was admitted with complains of pain abdomen and fever along with thrombocytopenia. Besides features of dengue fever, the presence of typical abdominal pain, high serum amylase, ultrasound, and computerized tomography scan features suggested the diagnosis of an acute pancreatitis. This complication developed in the initial phase of the illness. The patient had mild-to-moderate pancreatitis that recovered uneventfully with conservative treatment. The awareness of this complication in dengue fever is necessary for timely management of patients which will aid in reducing mortality.

ABSTRACT

Brucellosis is a Gram-negative, aerobic zoonotic infection acquired by Brucella species and transmitted from animals to humans through the ingestion of infected food products, direct contact with an infected animal, or inhalation of aerosols. Usually, the disease remains undiagnosed due to lack of awareness and inadequate reporting and is a challenging health problem in tropical countries. We report a case of 16-year-old male presenting to us with chronic inflammatory symmetric polyarthritis misdiagnosed as juvenile idiopathic arthritis but later found to be suffering from brucellosis on reevaluation. Through this case report, we would like to highlight the possibility and advantage of the high degree of suspicion for an infectious etiology responsible for arthritis in the background of autoimmunity and would also like to emphasize on the possibility of Brucella inducing a false-positive response for young patients presenting with arthritis.

Background: Thyroid hormones play an important physiological role to maintain balance of metabolism of entire human body. Erythrocyte abnormalities are frequently associated with thyroid disorder. Subclinical hypothyroidism, often a hidden entity, is associated with iron-deficiency anemia along with other hematological disorders. Thyroid hormones have a crucial role in metabolism and proliferation of blood cells. Thyroid dysfunction has profound effects on blood cells such as anemia, alters RBC indices including MCV, MCHC as well as iron stores. Present study was carried out to investigate and explore subclinical hypothyroid patients, to know the effect of subclinical hypothyroidism on hematological parameters and body iron store.Methods: This retrospective study included 200 newly diagnosed, untreated subclinical hypothyroid, and 200 healthy euthyroid individuals. The hematological parameters and thyroid profile of the subjects were assessed by the mean, standard deviation (SD). Student抯 t-test was used to report our results, with p-value <0.05 considered as statistically significant.Results: In this study we have compared hemoglobin level, red cell indices, serum Ferritin among study group and euthyroid healthy group and found that mean hemoglobin, serum ferritin and RBC indices were significantly depleted in subclinical hypothyroid patient in comparison to euthyroid group. 37 of total 200 [18.22%] newly diagnosed subclinical hypothyroid patients was suffering from Iron deficiency anemia with significant number of patients having hemoglobin level less than 10 gm%.Conclusions: Iron deficiency anemia is quite common in Subclinical hypothyroidism and is often associated with depleted body iron store and complication of getting converted into primary hypothyroidism. As there is no significant clinical manifestation of SCH at earlier stages with anemia it is advisable to routinely investigate it for early detection allowing its early management.

ABSTRACT

The present study was undertaken to investigate the antidiabetic potential of tap roots of Potentilla fulgens in streptozotocin induced diabetic rat models. The crude powder, ethanolic, ethanolic: aqueous and aqueous extracts of tap roots were administered to normoglycemic- and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats in a single dose study. The ethanolic extract showed significant improvement in oral glucose tolerance and antihyperglycemic effect on sucrose loaded normal rats and STZ-induced diabetic rats. Of the isolated aqueous, n-butanol, chloroform and n-hexane soluble fractions of the active ethanolic extract of the roots, the aqueous fraction (100 mg/kg body weight) showed significant blood glucose lowering effect on STZ-induced diabetic rats. In a multiple dose study, aqueous fraction of ethanolic extract of P. fulgens roots significantly improved the body weight, percent glycated hemoglobin (%HbA1c), fasting blood glucose, oral glucose tolerance (OGTT), serum insulin, lipid profile, liver and kidney parameters in STZ-induced diabetic rats. The aqueous fraction also showed marked improvement in OGTT and serum insulin level in neonatal STZ-induced diabetic rats for 30 consecutive days. The aqueous fraction of the roots also inhibited the activity of alpha (α)-glucosidase enzyme in a dose dependent manner. In conclusion, the finding suggested that an aqueous fraction of tap roots of P. fulgens possessed potential antidiabetic activity.

Background: Kasni (Cichorium intybus L.) reported to play an important role in the effective management of serum liver enzymes SGPT & SGOT in various animal models and this study is extension to newly diagnosed patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Newly diagnosed 90 patients of Type2 DM, age 35-65years, of either sex were divided into 3 groups. In group I only Metformin sustained release once a day and in group II/III 6 grams crude seed powder or 50 ml decoction of crude seed powder was given twice a day for 90 days in combination with Metformin sustained release orally once in a day. Serum liver enzyme levels of SGPT & SGOT were measured at zero, 30th, 60th and 90th day. Results: All the three groups showed a significant reduction in SGPT & SGOT across the four time periods. Post hoc Tukey HSD test shown that there was a significant difference between group I & II (p=0.011) and group I & III (p=0.000) for SGPT and group I & II (p=0.012) and group I & III (p=0.000) for SGOT. Conclusions: The add on therapy with Kasni seed preparations is more effective for the management of altered SGPT and SGOT levels in Type2 diabetes mellitus patients than only oral hypoglycaemic agent in decreasing SGPT & SGOT of selected patients. Among Kasni seed preparation treated groups, decoction was found more effective than crude seed powder.
